The search for a full set of limited edition rainbow coloured makeup brings two unlikely girls together.
Amber runs a semi-popular makeup channel. It combines the two things she loves best, makeup and teaching people. While talking face-to-face with people scares her, talking to a camera is much easier, it feels safer.
That distance between herself and the people who watch her videos has always been right for her, until she meets a girl who makes her rethink everything she does.
Mya is a girl of many interests, from gaming to anime and manga to makeup and clothes, she loves it all. What she likes even more is to share her passions with other people, and she surrounds herself with those who love similar things.
She’s good at talking to people, she loves it even, but then she meets one girl who could undo all of that and expose her much darker side…
A new makeup brand brings out a rainbow themed collection and as both girls work together to collect every last piece of it, their lives start to change in ways they never expected.

Chapter 1 – Amber
Vlogging = Video logging = A method of keeping a log or a type of diary through videos. This type of video content is especially popular with gaming, makeup and similar subjects that you can easily talk about in front of a camera and where adding video to the audio adds extras to the content. I’ve been doing makeup vlogging for a few years now, I’ve realised that no matter how scary I find talking to people face-to-face, talking to camera is by far not as scary, even when I know that people will be watching it later.
“Don’t forget to like, subscribe and leave a comment below. I’ll see you next time. Love you all.” I wave at the camera, taking a few seconds, and then I turn the camera off. This was the third time I had to film the outro of the video, but it can’t be helped. Sometimes… Sometimes things just don’t work out the way I thought they would. Three times to film one section isn’t even too bad, in the grand scheme of things.
I take the camera from the holder and connect it to my computer, starting the process of loading all the videos onto my computer as I put away the rest of my filming set up. I sort all the makeup that I’ve used in the video and put them away in their own drawers and baskets and things like that. Luckily, I already wrote them down before I started filming because I’ve too often put them away and then I’d have to hunt them all down again when I wanted to put the ‘items used’ in the description of the video.
If I at least keep everything organised, then finding things I need is much, much easier. I open a drawer with eyeshadow palettes, putting the one I used today into it, and then taking a look at the few at the front that I haven’t tried out yet. There have been quite a few new collections out in the last couple of weeks, and I haven’t been able to catch up on reviewing and trying everything yet. But I know that my viewers don’t really mind, they prefer a comprehensive video about what you can do with a palette over one that is about the latest items just to be one of the first ones to talk about it. Mine is more of a ‘how to’ channel than a ‘review’ channel in that way.
I pick up two palettes that I’ve been using a lot lately, and put them on top of the dresser for the next video. With the fall season coming up, I want to do a fall makeup video, showing off some of my favourite colour combinations and choices for the colder months.
I take the filming rig from the table, putting it away too, since the table that I film on is also my desk, and then I turn off the bright lights. I still live at my parents’ place and since I don’t have a dedicated video location, I have to build up the ‘studio’ every time I make a new video. It’s a bit of a hassle, but at the same time, it also helps me to keep everything separate in my head. I record the video material, making sure I get everything the way I want it, with all the extra shots that I’ll need, and as I wait for the videos to load on the computer, I take the whole filming rig down before I get behind my computer and make a cohesive video out of the material. Creating boundaries between planning, creating, editing and then uploading and sharing the video really helps me to not worry about everything, to not have it bleed into each other, and it helps me to make sensible decisions at every step of the creation process.
Taking a deep breath, I get behind my computer. The videos have now been uploaded to it, and I load them into the video editor, having to wait again for that to process what I’ve made. I grab my planner from my bag, and cross off ‘filming’ under this week’s video. Or, at least, this specific video for this week.
There’s only so many things that I can plan and do for each week, between classes and being social on social media and filming the videos… It’s all… It can get all a little overwhelming how much time it takes and how little time there is in a day or a week. But no matter how difficult and exhausting it sometimes is, I like it. It makes me feel good about myself and what I can do. So no matter how hard it sometimes is… I keep going.
After editing all the different parts of the video into a whole that actually makes sense, the intro at the start, even though I filmed that at the end, and every step of what I did, with shots of the products, in the right order, the program is now rendering the file. This always takes a long while, even if I’ve configured my computer so that it should be able to do this faster than most setups, it still takes a lot longer than I like.
Luckily, this video won’t go live until tomorrow afternoon, so it’s not that I’m under a time crunch, the waiting is mostly just annoying when I want to do other things.
I turn to the shelf I’ve filled with makeup for the next video. I’m going to do three fall looks, a light one, a romantic one and one that would probably be described as ‘full glam’, ‘full glamourous’, so a very over the top one. The idea is that by building on the styles you can go from a light style for during the day at school or at work, to a romantic style for a date or just having dinner with your friends somewhere, to the glam style for going out to clubs and things like that. Not that I have much experience with that last one, but, from seeing other videos and sometimes seeing people when I’m going home, I can still come up with a good style for it.
Generally, I prefer my colours in the purple and cool red area, and during fall that usually comes down to things like cranberry colours combined with brown and gold. Every season moves the general colours around, but I have my own preference and I know what tends to look good on me. There is only so much that I can really test on myself, and with my limited time, I tend to go for what works.
Opening the drawer with lipsticks, I grab a few of my favourite light lipsticks, a couple of the more medium tone and then some really bold ones. Every look will have their own lipstick, their own eyeshadow, their own blush and everything like that. There’s just so much out there to try, but these are mostly my tried-and-true favourites. Of course, things like foundation isn’t changed between looks, but that’s because I’m building, not replacing. It all makes sense in my head.
I get pulled from my thoughts, almost dropping two tubes of lipstick, by knocking on my door. “Amber?” Mum knocks on the door again.
“Yes?” I stand up and open the door.
“Are you done filming”? She looks me over, before peeking into the room.
“Yeah, for now. I was hoping to get an extra video in for this week. Get ahead, you know?” I step back and let her into my room.
“Okay. I was just wondering if you wanted to go into the city together?” She shrugs a little and then looks over to the makeup I’ve spread out over my desk. “Those colours look really nice on you. Great combinations.”
“Ehm…” Going into the city will be fun in some ways, like checking out the different stores, but at the same time… there will be so many people, so many impressions going on, overloading my brain. I’ll lose a lot of time, not just by being in the city, but also from recovering afterwards, calming my brain down again. It’s always so tiring, but also fun…
Mum looks up at me again. “You don’t have to, you know. Really. I was just wondering since I’m going anyway.”
I nod. I did want to check a few things out and now I don’t have to go by myself tomorrow or after classes. “When would you like to leave?”
“Not yet. I was thinking… in about an hour?” She raises an eyebrow at me.
If I’ve got an hour to prepare, I can put together a list of things that I need to look for and add a couple of items that I need to pick up anyway, like remover and a lipstick that I wear so often that it’s running dangerously low.
“Sure. I’ll come.” I smile at her, my brain going over the recent releases I’ve been wanting to grab or test out.
So many new ideas, so many brands coming out with new collections and pallets and things like that. And then, of course, there is the elusive Rainbow Collection from Curious Cosmetics, a brand new Dutch cosmetics company which a lot of people want to get their hands on. It was released last week, but I’ve barely been able to find a quart of the pallets in stores or online, and I know that many of the beauty vloggers have had the same problem. It seems that this is one of those… One of those things that will really take over the community, just by being so elusive. I guess I can try to find a few more items by them when I’m in town today.
“I’ll be down in about an hour.”
“Okay. Glad to have you with me.” Mum smiles at me and then leaves the room again.
That hadn’t exactly been the plan for today, going into the city or looking for more parts of the Rainbow collection, but I guess that if I can go into town with my mum instead of having to take public transport, I should probably take this chance.
Mum holds up a mirror as I quickly check how I look. We’re standing next to the Martini tower and there are some people looking at us funnily, but I don’t care. This is a perfect occasion for something like this.
I swipe the lip gloss over my lips, working up the shine, and then I put everything back into by bag, I had to do a little touch up.
Mum smiles as she shakes her head a little. “I don’t know if I’d invited you if I knew you were going to do this.” Then she winks.
I wink back. “Yes, you would. Just gotta post something online today, and they love a little video like this.” I take my phone and point it at myself at an angle. I take a quick picture to see what it looks like, and while not perfect, it will have to do.
“I’ll just step back a little.” Mum takes my bag and makes sure that she’s out of range of my little video.
I raise the phone again, turning it to record instead of taking a picture. Then I put on my brightest smile.
“Hey, lovelies! I’m in the city right now, trying to find some cool colours to experiment with in the coming weeks, and, of course, to maybe hunt down a few more items from the Rainbow Collection. I’ll post a picture of what I’ve managed to find soon, but I’m hoping to add a few more items to it soon.” I take a short breath, widening my smile more. “Stay tuned for a three-stage fall makeup tutorial soon, and, hopefully, some rainbow inspired looks! I’m off for some shopping now. Love you all!”
